Psalm 116
I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live
But on that cross there will be silence from heaven – He will not listen to me
The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overwhelmed by trouble and sorrow.
Then I called on the name of the Lord: O Lord, save me!
I am overcome by the thought of what is ahead of me. O Father save me – there must be another way!
The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.
The Lord protects the simple-hearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.
Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.
I have seen and known the Father’s graciousness and compassion; I have seen and been the channel of His love to others. I have seen the deaf hear, the dumb speak, the lame leap for joy, the demon-possessed released, sinners forgiven – the Father will sort it out!
For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.
Perhaps He will deliver me – perhaps like Abraham with Isaac Father just wants me to be willing – perhaps he will provide another lamb for sacrifice .....but I am that Lamb
I believed; therefore I said, “I am greatly afflicted.”
And in my dismay I said, “All men are liars”.
Father, they frighten me and appal me – the hatred, the hypocrisy, the lies; the big sins and the petty sins – and I have to know that more intimately than anyone
How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.
The cup of salvation! But I have to drink the cup of wrath so that God can say as in Isaiah ‘See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.’
Father, take this cup from me – but if this cup cannot be removed unless I drink it ......the cup will become the cup of salvation again.
I will fulfil my vows to the Lord in the presence of all the people.
Not my will, but yours be done, O Lord.
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints
Precious to both of us, Father, because it is for your stricken, sinful world
O Lord, truly I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your maidservant; you have freed me from my chains.
I know what it means to be your servant, Father.    He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
I will sacrifice a thank-offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.
I will be the sacrifice to end all sacrifices – the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world – but I call on your name O Lord for vindication and final deliverance
I will fulfil my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people
Not my will but yours be done O Lord
In the courts of the house of the Lord – in your midst, O Jerusalem
In Jerusalem! – the place which should welcome me as its King cries ‘Crucify him!’
Praise the Lord!
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are his ways of forgiveness higher than our ways, and his thoughts of mercy higher than our thoughts.
Psalm 118
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures for ever.
Let Israel say:’His love endures for ever’. Let the house of Aaron say ‘His love endures for ever’. Let those who fear the Lord say ‘His love endures for ever’.
Father, your love endures for ever – but I will not know it on that cross.
In my anguish I cried to the Lord, and he answered by setting me free.
You have set me free from self-love and clinging to life
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
The Lord is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies
You will be with me even though I will not know it. Man can do nothing to me – its the burden that you will put upon me that will be the worst – and my enemies will look in triumph on me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes
But I trust you not them – your promise is that I will be vindicated and see life ; I may not be their idea of a Messiah, but I know that I am yours.
All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I cut them off.
They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the Lord I cut them off.
They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them off.
They’ll be all around – jeering, mocking, scourging, casting lots for my clothes, manhandling ....nailing ....
But they don’t understand – Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing
Father cut ME off – so that they may not be cut off.
I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me.
The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
There are going to be times when I will falter – please Father be my strength in those times – be my salvation so that I may be the salvation of the world.
Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: ‘The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things! The Lord’s right hand is lifted high; the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!’
You delivered Israel from Egypt – you will deliver me from death
I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done.
The Lord has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death.
Death will not be able to hold me – for the mighty Father will not let death hold his Holy One
Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous may enter.
I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.
I will enter this gate; the gateway to death will become the gateway to righteousness; the tree of shame will become the tree of glory. I will open the gate of glory so that others may enter through it. I will become their salvation.
The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this and it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
It’s hard to be rejected by God’s people – but he will build a new people with me as the foundation.
O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.
O that they would have recognised God’s moment when it came – O that the hosannas would not become crucify him
The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.
There will be the darkness – but I will see the light of the Father’s face again. So I go to the altar willingly – to be the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.
You are my God, and I will give thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures for ever.
You will not let me go; I WILL give thanks, I WILL exalt you. And I will do it for ever, because your love endures for ever. So to death and then to life for evermore.
Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
