Colossians 2:13-15; John 12:27-36

This discussion continues to refer back to the sermon on March 15.

1)      Find some passages in the New Testament which speak of the cross in terms of God’s love. Romans 5:6-8 is a good place to start!
2)      In the Gospels, find examples of Jesus showing love to people during the Passion.
3)      Share how the cross speaks to you of God’s love for you.
4)      Medieval theologian Peter Abelard wrote that seeing the love Christ had for us kindles such a love in us that we respond in love to God and to others; we are turned around by the cross which thereby effects our salvation. Does this ring bells with your experience?
5)      Abelard’s view has been criticized as holding before us an example of love that we cannot follow, so that it gives us more guilt instead of bringing us salvation. Is that a fair criticism? Have a look at 1 John 4:7-21.
6)      Think of some of your favourite hymns about the cross. Which of them pick up the understanding of the cross as a demonstration of God’s love?
7)      What sort of human situations does this understanding of the cross speak into?
