1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5

Week 2   1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5 (following sermon on 26 April)
1)      Read the passage together. What issues in Corinth (see background notes) was Paul trying to address in this section of the letter?
2)      How are we tempted to ‘demand signs’ or ‘seek wisdom’ (v 22)? How does the cross speak to those temptations?
3)      Look at verses 26-31. Which issues in Corinth is Paul addressing?
4)      There are two temptations in comparing ourselves with others; we can think that we are superior and have nothing to learn from others; OR we can think that we are inferior and have nothing to offer. Which describes the way you think about yourself? (You don’t have to answer aloud!!!) How does what Paul says speak to those two different ways of thinking?
5)      What do you understand by ‘boasting in the Lord’?
6)      Look at chapter 2 verses 1-5. ‘Lofty speech’ (v 1) probably refers to debating or speech-making skills. Does this mean that we shouldn’t think about how we speak about our faith? What makes a good sermon for you?
7)      Share experiences of examples of the ‘demonstration of the Spirit and of power’ (v 5).
